Thursday, January 6, 2011 @ 8:16 PM Ever since the Kpop wave, everyone has been going crazy over Kpop. Well, actually, I like listening to Kpop too. I like to listen to any pop. Pop songs are generally nice, and they appeal to everyone, despite different nationalities, races, or religion. The name of 'Pop' derives from the word 'popular', so in a sense, all pop music are supposed to be popular. Therefore, Kpop being popular is not surprising at all. In fact, they are supposed to be popular since they are Korean Pop music. There are all sorts of pop music, Korean Pop music, Chinese Pop music, Japanese Pop music, and my favourite: General Pop music (which just means English Pop I think). They are all Pop, so they are all highly appealing to the main population. However! We should not just only enjoy pop music. I mean, they are nice and all, everybody loves them, they are popular music, but everyone should not just listen to what's popular, and ignore the other non-mainstream music. Music should be appreciated everywhere, despite the genres! Pop music is nice, but that doesn't mean non-pop music is not nice! People should be able to appreciate all kinds of music, even if they do not like it, they should at least acknowledge them, and appreciate them. If you just confine yourself to pop music, your knowledge of music would be greatly reduced and you would not be able to fully understand the passion in the 21st century! So anyway, non-mainstream music are generally called cult music. Normal people would usually find these non-mainstream music really weird and strange, and we would not be able to appreciate it, and we would not like it. But there's no harm exposing yourselves to these kinds of different genres so that you get to know more about the musical life in the 21st century! And who knows, you might like it a lot. People that start liking cult music would end up being really loyal to the music genre (even if nobody else ever hear it). The singers singing cult music would usually live on these small groups of ultra loyal fans to survive (they would die if they decide to venture away to the main population). So let me introduce you to some genres: Gothic rock, punk rock, hardcore punk, metal core, emocore. Anyway, I also never listen to any of the genres I listed above, I just listed so that if you are interested you can go listen to some and expose yourself to different genres of music other than pop, so... I'll just introduce to you a semi non-mainstream band that I actually heard and was good: TOKIO HOTEL! Yeah, they're gothic rock, but they're slightly mainstream too. Lol don't you think they're a bit weird? Okay anyway here's a song for you to get started. This is a rather mainstream song they did, but you know, just to get you started. ^^ Well, that's all for my post. Hope everyone don't just get stuck in the pop world. (the annoying kpop world for that matter) ^^ ~liwei
